The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, today called on Portuguese people to vote early or mobile in the European elections, urging them to “not stop voting”.
Speaking to the press after attending the European “State of the Union” conference held at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza expressed hope that the June 9 elections will see a repeat of the “two new phenomena” that occurred in the legislative elections organs in March last year.
“I must say that I was very happy about the last legislative elections because, having reversed the trend, we were suddenly faced with two new phenomena: firstly, the abstention rate dropped to 33%. Secondly, young people vote en masse,” he began.
“I am here, ironically, appealing to the Portuguese: either vote in advance, like me, because on the 9th I am busy celebrating the 10th of June, or vote for mobility, which is now the 9th of June itself. June, wherever you are, try to vote without being able to vote at your usual polling place, the one that is most accessible,” he said, adding that the important thing is that “you can’t do that.” I will stop voting.”
“Get used to voting because it is normal in democracy and it was very normal at the beginning of Portuguese democracy,” he added.
European elections will take place from June 6 to 9 in the 27 member states of the European Union, with elections taking place in Portugal on the 9th.
