Almost half (49%) of nurses in Portugal worked ten or more consecutive days without vacation. This is one of the findings of the Hospital – Casa report, which talks about long shifts, few days off and even less rest. The data shows that “the professional class is on the verge of exhaustion.” On average, each nurse works 163 hours per month with six days off during the same period.
Eight out of 10 nurses (81%) had already contacted someone or a work topic during their vacation or vacation. More than two in 10 respondents (23%) believe that rest is not enough to compensate for long hours and hard work, and 29% barely take the opportunity to relax. 37% say there are times when they can’t rest due to work schedules, and only 11% say they feel rested after rest days. And to the question “how many times a week do you feel like you start the working day already tired?”, 55% answer “two or three times a week”, 30% “every day”, 14% “rarely” and only 1% say, who “never” starts work due to accumulated fatigue.
The data indicates a “permanent state of exhaustion and even Burn out leading to the need to transition to periods of absence or even sick or psychological leave.”
Report prepared MyCareforce and for Nurse shows that two out of every 10 respondents have been on sick leave at least once, and 42% have thought about it, but either thought they could last longer (17%) or that it was not the right time due to their responsibilities and work context (25%). This context is also important for the 5% who say they have never felt receptive to this from leaders or teams, which is the reason they have never taken sick leave. A nurse in Portugal earns on average €1,647.10 gross per month.stated in the report, emphasizing that 71% of nurses work in multiple departments due to the need for additional income. The need for higher salaries is the main reason why five in ten nurses (52%) are already thinking about emigrating.
