Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said this Friday in Berlin that meeting the timetable to reach 2% of the value of GDP in defense investment is “ambitious” but will be achieved by 2030.
The head of the Portuguese government went to Germany, this was his second official visit abroad. Together with Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the Federal Chancellery, where he was received with military honors, he answered questions from journalists.
“Our goal in government is to meet the schedule of achieving 2% of the value of our budget as a percentage of GDP in the defense sector by 2030. This is an ambitious schedule, given that we will have to catch up with the backlog that has meanwhile accumulated over the past few years,” said the leader of the Portuguese government.
“Our commitment to NATO, our partners, the Atlantic Alliance is complete. From this point of view, we understand that we cannot rely only on words, this commitment must also be materialized in actions,” he emphasized.
Berlin has already announced that it will reach a defense spending target of at least 2% of GDP this year. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged to continue pursuing this goal in the future.
Luis Montenegro emphasized the support that Germany provided to Ukraine, being on the “help line” so that Kyiv could protect itself from aggression that “brings neither a future nor good expectations for Europe and the world.”
