The PSD President and Prime Minister said that regional meetings this Sunday in Madeira “leave no doubt” about the voters’ intention for the PSD to lead the government and for it to be headed by Miguel Albuquerque.
Luis Montenegro spoke to journalists at the PSD national headquarters about the results of the regional elections in Madeira, in which the PSD won without an absolute majority.
“The Madeirans clearly chose, and for eight months, the same political force to lead the regional government, and the same candidate,” he said.
On the other hand, Montenegro accused PS and Chega of a “massive failure” to achieve their goals in the Madeira regional regions, leaving a signal to their leaders at the national level.
“The time has come to demand democratic respect, democratic humility for those who lose (…) What we hope for in the future is that elections will no longer be repeated, that elections will not be held every six months,” he said , stating that he did not want to interfere with government decisions on Madeira.
Montenegro, who spoke to reporters accompanied by PSD vice-presidents Margarida Balseiro Lopez and Ines Ramalho, as well as Secretary General Hugo Soares, said it had already congratulated Miguel Albuquerque.
“The victory of the PSD and Dr. Miguel Albuquerque leaves no doubt about the intentions of the people of Madeira and Porto Santo: the PSD will lead the government and that this government will be led by Dr. Miguel Albuquerque,” he said. , hoping it will lead to “a solution that provides manageability and stability.”
Asked about statements by Chega leader Andre Ventura, who expressed his readiness to reach an understanding with PSD-Madeira, but without Miguel Albuquerque, the Social Democratic leader repeated that “the voters spoke clearly and unequivocally.”
“Ask someone who won the election to resign? It doesn’t make sense and no one understands it,” he said.
When asked whether Albuquerque should be the candidate charged in the corruption investigation, Montenegro did not answer directly, repeating that elections “are a solemn moment of expression of the will of the people.”
The PSD leader declined to say whether he preferred PSD-Madeira to govern in a minority or seek to negotiate a minority solution that respected regional autonomy.
“Governing everywhere is not easy, it is necessary that everyone can take their responsibility, and my principle is that whoever wins should govern,” he said.
Asked about the national readings of the results this Sunday, namely for PS and Chege, the Prime Minister said that “everyone has to interpret the will of the people.”
“Today in Portugal we have three PSD governments: one in the Republic, one in the Azores and one in Madeira. These three governments do not have an absolute majority, but three have won elections and have democratic legitimacy,” he said.
“So what can happen? There are two parties – PS and Chega – not satisfied with the people’s will, they can block the government,” he said, noting that this is possible in the national parliament, but this will not be enough. in Wood.
The prime minister said it was “not for lack of effort” in the national parliament, as well as in the parliaments of the Azores and Madeira, that opposition parties “do not have the ability and capacity to make a positive contribution to solving problems.”
“What I can’t do is get people who don’t have the desire to have that behavior to put it into action. PS and Chega talk, talk, talk, but in the end they are complicit and agree to block governments chosen by voters, but this is a responsibility that every person must take,” he accused.
According to information provided by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, the Social Democrats received 36.13% of the votes and 19 seats in the regional parliament of Madeira, consisting of a total of 47 deputies.
In second place, the PS received 11 elected representatives, followed by the AKP with nine, Chega with four, SDS-NP with two, and IL and PAN with one MP each. The BE and the CDU leave the Legislative Assembly compared to the previous composition.
