According to official preliminary results, the PSD won this Sunday in nine of the 11 municipalities of Madeira, while the other two went to the leadership of the PS in the case of Machico and the JPP in the case of Santa Cruz.
In the early regional elections that took place, the Social Democrats saw a reduction in the size of their absolute majority, which is now only observed in the municipality of Calheta (51.78%), when on September 24, 2023 they achieved this in six municipalities (albeit in a coalition with the SDS-PP) .
According to information provided by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, the PSD was very close to a majority in the municipalities of Ponta do Sol (49.71%) and Porto Moniz (49.23%).
Apart from the municipalities where the PS and JPP won, the PSD had the smallest vote in Funchal with 33.34%, although the Social Democrats won in all 10 parishes of the largest municipality (with votes above 30% and below 40%).
In Machico, the PSD was the second most popular political force (33.40%), losing the municipality to the IPS by only 12 votes, with the Socialists winning in two of the five parishes (Machico and Canizal).
The same second place remained for the PSD in the municipality of Santa Cruz (26.85%), where the JPP won the elections by a margin of 1,563 votes, winning all five constituencies.
PS came in second place in all municipalities, with the exception of Santa Cruz, which JPP took from PSD, which in turn began to occupy this position.
The JPP overthrew Chegu from the third position achieved in seven of Madeira’s eleven municipalities in the last elections, finishing third in all districts except Santa Cruz, where it won, and Santana, where this position was achieved by the CDS-PP. who stood alone for this Sunday’s vote.
The PSD won 45 of the region’s 54 constituencies, losing to the PPP five in the municipality of Santa Cruz; two to Machico (Machico and Canizal) and one to Porto Moniz (Achadas da Cruz) for PS; and one in Calheta (Pol do Mar) from the SDS-PP, which won an absolute majority there.
In the municipality of Calheta, the PSD won with an absolute majority in six of the eight parishes, with the highest number of electoral votes recorded in the parish of Prazeres (60%).
According to preliminary final results, the PSD won the regional elections in Madeira with 36.13% of the vote and 19 seats, but without an absolute majority.
According to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, the PS was the second most voted force with 21.32% and elected 11 deputies, while the Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) came in third with 16.89% and nine deputies.
This Sunday, early regional legislative elections in Madeira took place, in which more than 254 thousand voters voted.
In the single circle elections, 47 seats in the Legislative Assembly of the region are being contested, for which 14 candidates (one coalition and 13 single parties) competed.
Compared to the regional elections on September 24, 2023, the only difference from the competitors’ point of view is that the SDP and SDS-PP (which governed together in the last two legislatures) are represented on different lists when they voted together last year.
The early elections took place eight months after the last regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, dissolved the Madeira parliament following a political crisis that arose in January when the leader of the regional government (CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, named as a defendant in a trial that is investigating suspicions of corruption.
