The PSD/Madeira won the regional legislatures again on Sunday, falling short of an absolute majority for the third time in a row, but said it could provide a “government of stability” while the PS believed there was room to create an alternative.
According to the official preliminary election night results published by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, the PSD elected 19 deputies (36.13%, 49,103 votes) and the SDS two (3.96%, 5,384 votes) when in 2009 in the past, in the coalition, they managed 20 and three, respectively.
The two parties, which reached an agreement after the 2019 elections – the year the PSD lost its absolute majority for the first time – have ruled the archipelago together since then, but in 2023 the Social Democrats signed an agreement on parliamentary influence with the only elected member of the PAN so that the coalition could count on the support of 24 of the 47 deputies of the Legislative Assembly.
