Nearly 98,000 voters registered for early voting in Portugal

A total of 97,386 voters had registered by 12 pm this Monday to exercise their early voting rights on June 2, a source at the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) told Lusa.

According to the MAI, early mobile voting on Sunday, June 2, is allowed to all registered voters in the country at their chosen polling station, and registration can be completed until Thursday, the 30th.

Portugal recorded its worst abstinence rate at the 2019 European Championships (68.6%) since joining the European Union, in contrast to European participation at around 50%.

To try to reverse this trend – in addition to early voting for the sick, prisoners and those abroad, or mobility voting on the previous Sunday (2 June) – there is a new modality this year, only possible because there are “dematerialized lists” voters.”

Any registered voter in Portugal can vote “except in the place where he is registered,” Fernando Anastácio, a spokesman for the National Electoral Commission (CNE), explained to Luça on the 25th.

“You can choose without any pre-registration conditions, for example you live in Lisbon, you are registered in Lisbon, but on the 9th you are in Porto, you can go to any polling station in Porto: present yourself to vote, identify yourself with a citizen card or document that is considered valid for identification purposes and exercise your right to vote,” he said.

Elections at the European level were scheduled for the period from 6 to 9 June.

And this, according to a CNE spokesman, is “a particularly difficult period for Portugal” as it coincides with “a week that is usually a period of mini-holidays.”

Some 373 million European voters are called upon to vote for the European Parliament between 6 and 9 June. In Portugal, voting will take place on the 9th.

720 MEPs will be elected, 21 of whom are Portuguese.

A total of 17 parties and coalitions are participating in the elections: AD, PS, Chega, IL, BE, CDU, Livre, PAN, ADN, MAS, Ergue-te, Nova Direita, Volt Portugal, RIR, Nos Cidadaos, MPT and PTP.
