The mayors who suspended their mandates have already returned to the municipalities of Madeira.

The six mayors who suspended their mandates to participate in the early regional elections in Madeira, which took place on Sunday, returned to the municipalities this Monday, they confirmed to the Lusa agency.

The presidents of the municipalities of Calheta, Carlos Teles, Ribeira Brava, Ricardo Nascimento and São Vicente José António Garcés, suspended their mandates, with these three serving their third and final term because they were on the PSD list.

The Socialist mayors of the councils of Machico and Porto Moniz, Ricardo Franco and Emanuel Camara, respectively, were also on the PS/Madeira list and interrupted their functions in the municipalities.

Filipe Sousa, president of the municipal council of Santa Cruz, the only municipality governed by Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), also suspended his mandate again, as happened when he led the party list in the March 10 national elections.

Six mayors, all of whom were in their final terms, suspended their positions between April 15 and May 26.

Six mayors were elected in regional elections on Sunday and therefore their mandates as regional deputies will now be suspended.

The early elections in Madeira took place eight months after the last regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeira parliament following a political crisis triggered in January when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in the case on investigation of suspicions of corruption.

Sunday’s regional legislative elections featured 14 candidates, one coalition (PCP/PEV) and 13 other parties: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP .

According to the results published by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the PSD received 49,103 votes (36.13%), winning 19 parliamentary seats and without an absolute majority in five terms.

In second place, the PS received 11 elected, followed by the AKP with nine, Chega with four, SDS-PP with two, and IL and PAN with one MP each. The BE and the CDU leave the Legislative Assembly compared to the previous composition.
