On Tuesday, the SDP leader accused the speaker of parliament of being Chega’s “biggest political accomplice” and confirmed that he intends to be “an alternative to the government” and “not be distracted by conversations of interest to the PS.”
Speaking in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, in Guarda, after visiting a sheep and cattle breeder and participating in a meeting with farmers under the Sentir Portugal initiative, Luis Montenegro responded to the statements of Augusto Santos Silva in a new podcast. ‘ of the PS Parliamentary Group, in which she suggested that there was complicity between the SDP and Chega.
For SDP President Santos Silva “returns to his status as a hardened socialist and looks at himself in the mirror, because he is objectively the greatest political supporter, the greatest political accomplice of Chega, with all the episodes that will accumulate in Parliament precisely to praise the role of Chega.”
The parliament speaker and former foreign minister “decided to go back to this version of ‘pushing’ others,” he accused. “That’s what these two statements basically mean. I take note,” he added.
The leader of the Social Democrats was not shy in terms, even suggesting that Santos Silva is “trying to win space within the Portuguese left in order to gain a springboard for a new political adventure,” alluding to the presidential candidate from 2026.
“What I can say and record is that Dr. Santos Silva wants to ‘turn beak to nail’. Chega’s accomplice in this country is PS, and in particular Dr. Santos Silva,” he insisted.
On the other hand, Luis Montenegro sought to sidestep the issue of a possible future understanding between the SDP and Chegoy and the challenge posed by that party’s leader, Andre Ventura, for an agreement to remove the PS from the government.
“The SDP is the government’s alternative to the Socialist Party and it will not lose sight of this goal. I’m here to be prime minister. And I’m here to get voters for Chega, the Liberal Initiative, PS. The Communist Party and the Bloc I don’t have much hope. I confess that I am more realistic in this area,” he said.
The social democratic leader also believed that only the socialists and the prime minister were interested in the issue of agreements between the SDP and Chega.
“I’m here to be an alternative to PS. I’m not here to be distracted by conversations that interest PS, Dr. Santos Silva, Dr. Antonio Costa and all those assistants who accompany these two figures on Tuesday, Prime Minister. Minister and Chairman of the Assembly of the Republic in the PS,” he stressed.
In a PS parliamentary group ‘podcast’ aired on Tuesday, Augusto Santos Silva denied benefiting Chege when he debated directly with the party and accused PSD of being Andre Ventura’s accomplice.
“The one who criticizes, who fights, who stands in the way, is an accomplice?” Santos Silva asked, referring to the current SDP leadership.
