Political scientist Teresa Ruel this Monday noted that the results of the regional elections in Madeira show the “erosion and wear and tear” associated with the PSD’s 48 years of government in the region, highlighting the unknown of how it will govern.
“As has already been said, [os resultados] clearly reflect the erosion and wear and tear that have been associated with these 48 years of existence of the PSD as the party governing the region,” Teresa Ruel said in an interview with the Lusa agency.
The PSD/Madeira won the regional legislatures again on Sunday, falling short of an absolute majority for the third time in a row, but said it could provide a “government of stability” while the PS believed there was room to create an alternative.
According to the official preliminary election night results published by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, Sunday’s elections in Madeira were won by the PSD, which received 36.13% of the votes (49,103) and elected 19 deputies, falling short of the target. out of 24 to obtain an absolute majority.
This was followed by the PS with 11 MPs, the JPP which rose to nine, Chega with four, the CDS-PP with two and the IL and PAN each electing one representative.
The CDU (PCP/PEV) and Bloc de Esquerda (BE) failed to elect deputies, as did the PTP, Livre, ADN, MPT and RIR.
According to the professor of political science and expert on regional autonomies, the PSD “recorded the worst result in the history of these elections”, remembering that the difficulty at the moment “is to understand where and how it will find support, be it parliamentary or in government, to achieve some stability in the sense of being able to manage.”
The solution, according to the political scientist, can be found “by the majority, finding some partners and reaching certain agreements,” or it can be “in a minority situation,” which, according to Teresa Ruel, “is an innovation within the regional political system.”
“This bill [resultado] The SDP’s election campaign is far below what it achieved in the last elections in September. Therefore, there is an additional need to effectively find the mutual understanding and negotiations that should take place,” he said.
According to Teresa Ruel, “the proposed solution is still not clear,” given that “everything is still open” to a government decision.
Despite the fact that right-wing parties remain in the regional parliament, the political scientist believes that it is “unclear” what kind of decision should be made in the near future, and she also does not know whether the parties “agree to a possible conversation with the SDP.” .
“We have CDS and PAN with elected mandates, but in terms of arithmetic, this is not enough if we want to complete this exercise. Now, whether this is enough to maintain what will be a four-year mandate remains unknown, and moreover, it seems to me that it is very early to see any decision on the left or right,” he admitted.
