Kafofo believes he has the same legitimacy as the SDP to present a government solution.

PS/Madeira President Paulo Cafofo on Tuesday expressed to the representative of the Republic his readiness to present a government decision together with the JPP, given that it has the same legitimacy as the PSD, which also does not guarantee an absolute majority.

“Today, no party here has a majority decision that allows the representative of the Republic to guarantee, as far as I know, that the government’s decision can be accepted,” said Paulo Cafofo, stressing that the PS cannot remain “armed.” crossing out, not reacting and not creating conditions for a government decision.”

The Socialist leader spoke to reporters at the Sao Lourenço Palace in Funchal after being received by the representative of the Republic of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, who on Tuesday listens to the parties elected in Sunday’s regional elections. .

Paulo Cafofo said that if Ireneu Barreto “erroneously” nominates PSD/Madeira leader Miguel Albuquerque to form a government, “there is a possibility, taking into account what the parties said during the election campaign, that the Government Program and the vote of confidence will not pass.” .

On Monday evening, the PS and JPP, which have a total of 20 deputies, less than the 24 required for an absolute majority, had already announced that they would present a “joint government decision” to the representative of the Republic in Madeira.

Paulo Cafofo on Tuesday confirmed that the aim is to spread understanding to parties that “want to do this”, with the exception of the PS and Chega, insisting that the declaration of principles aims to form a “stable government in which the structuring reforms can be carried out under a government that is moderate but responsive to the needs and desires of the people of Madeira.”

“And that is why we have come here today to express our readiness, knowing also that in difficult parliamentary conditions there is a possibility that […] but we think that we have the same legitimacy as the SDP,” he stressed.

In Sunday’s regional legislative elections, Miguel Albuquerque’s PSD (President of the Madeira Executive since 2015) again won and elected 19 deputies, leaving five parliamentarians behind with an absolute majority.

The Socialists, the main opposition force, retained 11 seats in parliament from the previous term, while the AKP, the region’s third-largest political force, increased its membership from five to nine members. Chega elected four deputies, SDS-NP – two, and IL and PAN – one deputy each.

The early elections in Madeira took place eight months after the last regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeira parliament following a political crisis triggered in January when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in the case on investigation of suspicions of corruption.
