PCP Secretary General Paulo Raimundo said on Tuesday that the Portuguese state must respect the Constitution and take on a “role in building peace,” hoping this would be the “highlight” of the Ukrainian president’s visit to the country.
“The Portuguese State must respect what the Constitution defines, namely: [ser] The state is looking for a path to peace,” said the communist leader at the beginning of a meeting with workers’ organizations in Vendas Novas (Évora).
Answering a question from journalists about the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to Portugal, Paulo Raimundo began by saying that “the best way” to express solidarity with the Ukrainians “is to create all the conditions for ending the war.”
“Our Constitution is very clear. Portugal’s role is to build world peace and that is what I wanted this visit to achieve,” he stressed, stressing that he saw “no reason why this should not happen.”
While acknowledging that the country could reach agreements with Ukraine, the PCP secretary general believes Portugal should make a “clear and obvious contribution” to peace in that country, a gesture of “reaffirming its role as a peace builder.”
“You can’t find peace without bringing everyone involved in the war to the same table,” he said, dismissing the idea that Portugal couldn’t do it because it was a small country.
According to Paulo Raimundo, Portugal “has the diplomatic conditions and forums in which it participates to demand this path.”
Given that “the true idea of seeking peace is more widespread,” the communist leader said he has no doubt that the PKP suffered electoral losses due to its stance on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“We were following the campaign and were asked to convey the idea of a position we had never had. We are for peace, and from a party point of view we remain perhaps a little isolated in this demand for peace,” he added.
The PKP Secretary General took the opportunity to note that Spain, Norway and Ireland began officially recognizing Palestine as a state as of this Tuesday, classifying it as “an event of great importance.”
“This means that the number of countries that unilaterally do this is now greater than those that are closed in cups according to the supposed joint decision of the European Union,” he emphasized.
The communist leader criticized the previous and current governments for understanding that they had “taken refuge under this cover” of an EU decision “when they need to unilaterally recognize Palestine as a people and a sovereign independent nation.”
Raimundo took part in this meeting in Vendas Novas after visiting a winery and contacting wine producers in Cabesan, in the municipality of Mora, and before the session “In defense of social networks” in Montemor u Novo, also in the Évora region.
