The representative of the Republic of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, announced on Tuesday that he will appoint Miguel Albuquerque (PSD) as president of the regional government, given that the joint decision of the PS and JPP “has no chance of success.”
Ireneu Barreto announced that the candidacy for the leader of the PSD/Madeira will be put forward on Wednesday, at 12 noon, at the Palacio San Lourenzo, the official residence of the representative of the Republic in Funchal, explaining that the choice is due to the fact that he believes that “the solution presented the party with the most votes, the SDP, which has an agreement on parliamentary influence with the SDS, and the principled non-hostility of Chega, PAN and IL will have all the conditions to see its program approved by the Legislative Assembly.”
Regarding the joint PS-JPP resolution, the Republican representative noted that “it has no chance of success in the Legislative Assembly.”
“I take responsibility, I will do everything to make this Government work, I hope that others who have responsibilities at the level of the Parliamentary Assembly will […] know how to respect the interests of the region,” said Ireneu Barreto, speaking to reporters after receiving the elected parties on Sunday.
Regarding the fact that Miguel Albuquerque is accused in the process of investigating suspicions of corruption in the region, the judge-counselor emphasized that the presumption of innocence “is an absolute value”, so a situation has arisen in which the outgoing chairman of the regional government finds himself “not a problem” for you.
“What I want to tell the people of Madeira and Porto Santos is that we will have a government with a strong chance of overcoming the challenges ahead. A government that will have a government program and an approved budget,” he emphasized. .
Ireneu Barreto also said that he expects Miguel Albuquerque to hand over to him on Wednesday, during the nomination, “a written text signed” by Social Democrat and CDS-PP/Madeira leader José Manuel Rodrigues.
On Monday, “in principle”, Miguel Albuquerque will return to the Palace of São Lourenço to present a proposal for the composition of the new leader.
The representative of the republic also expressed hope that the new head of the region could be sworn in next week.
Ireneu Barreto received on Tuesday the seven parties represented in Parliament after Sunday’s regional elections, in order of increasing votes: PAN (one MP), IL (one), CDS-PP (two), Chega (four), JPP (nine), PS (11) and PSD (19).
In Sunday’s elections, Miguel Albuquerque’s PSD (President of the Madeira Executive since 2015) again won the regional legislatures and elected 19 deputies, claiming it was ready to provide a “government of stability”, but the PS believed there was room to create an alternative.
On Monday, the PS and JPP announced a “joint government decision” in the archipelago, which will be presented to the representative of the Republic in Madeira, calling on the participation of the remaining parties, with the exception of the PSD and Chega, “to ensure more reliable parliamentary support.”
On Tuesday morning, before being received by the representative of the Republic of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque and José Manuel Rodrigues met at the Quinta Vigia in Funchal, concluding an agreement on parliamentary support.
The early elections in Madeira took place eight months after the previous regional elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Parliament of Madeira following a political crisis triggered in January when the leader of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named as a defendant in a criminal investigation into suspicions in corruption.
