The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, warned on Tuesday of the importance of protecting human rights in a world where dictatorships are growing and democracies are shrinking, some of which are also losing quality.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Tuesday attended the opening of Amnesty International’s (AI) human rights center in Portugal, in Santo Amaro de Oeiras, Lisbon, AI’s new headquarters in the country.
For about 30 minutes the President spoke about the evolution of human rights in the world, starting with the institution of political rights and economic, social and cultural rights, he spoke about individual rights and women’s rights, and I praised AI, which is “the power of citizenship and the power of affirming human dignity “
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, faced with questions from the ceremony participants, also spoke about the conflict between Israel and Hamas, saying that in this region there are two people who understand that they have a right to the same territory, that the decision of the international community in it two states are involved, although defenders of this solution have lost weight.
It is necessary, he said, to support those who want to maintain this dialogue, so that in the future there will be two peoples and two states, and it is important that the European Union has a common position, and “not piecemeal.”
The AI Human Rights Center was opened on the day the organization celebrates its 63rd anniversary.
Pedro Neto, chief executive of AI Portugal, explained to Lusa that the change was necessary because the organization had a small headquarters in Lisbon, difficult to reach for people with limited mobility, and now has more space.
“We have a human rights center that we want to open to the public,” the official said, adding that AI can now respond to requests for visits in a space open for training and workshops.
When asked if more conditions mean more work, Pedro Neto replied that the conditions of the world always require more and more work, and recalled that AI is an organization with limitations in financial and human resources.
AI is a global movement of more than 10 million people that, in the organization’s own definition, is “mobilizing humanity” to make human rights a “universal reality.”
AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion and is essentially funded by members and individual donations.
In the face of news and reports of human rights violations, AI investigates and collects evidence and strives to resolve these situations, working so that people in all countries can enjoy all their rights.
