Some 60,600 Portuguese voters living abroad chose to elect MEPs from the countries in which they live rather than Portuguese, less than half of those who made that choice in previous European elections, according to official data.
A Home Office source told Lusa today that 60,603 Portuguese are registered to vote in the European Parliament elections on June 9, but for candidates from the countries in which they reside.
Portuguese expats in the European Union can choose between voting for Portuguese candidates for the European Parliament or for candidates from the countries in which they live.
France is the country where the choice of Portuguese MEPs from a resident country was the most significant (36,191), followed by Luxembourg (9,857) and Spain (6,592).
The same source said that of the 625,404 Portuguese voters living in the European Union registered to take part in this election event, 564,801 will elect Portuguese MEPs.
In the previous European elections, on 26 May 2019, 125,630 Portuguese expats decided to register for the census for the election of MEPs in their country of residence, the majority of them, according to official figures, in France, Spain and Luxembourg.
Some 373 million voters are called to choose 720 members of the European Parliament in elections taking place in the 27 member states of the European Union from June 6 to 9. In Portugal, where 21 members of the European Parliament are elected, voting is scheduled for June 9.
