BE accuses AD of wanting housing under the EU Charter of Rights and outside the budget

This Thursday, the head of the BE list for Europeans accused the Democratic Alliance of wanting to include housing in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, but exclude it from the state budget due to new economic management rules.

“Sebastian Bugallo introduced the idea of including housing in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. We, too. Do you know what is the difference between a BE clause and an AD clause? The Democratic Alliance wants to include housing in the Charter of Fundamental Rights and exclude them from the state budget. This is called Eurocynicism,” accused Katarina Martins at a rally in the city of Coimbra.

In her speech, in which she criticized new economic management rules recently approved by the European Union, the bloc member returned to the days of the country’s Troika, when “there were budget rules that you really had to follow, and someone to whom no one obeyed.” the chosen one came to say to Portugal, where I had to cut at any moment.”

In the context of Covid-19, he continued, these rules were suspended and after the pandemic they returned “with some changes”, namely more flexibility in which “not all countries need to have the same debt and deficit trajectory.”

However, he added that in the “fine print” of the contract, “the flexibility does not belong to the countries, but to the European Commission,” which “will say what rules can be applied.”

“But that’s not all: they say that even countries that adhere to the deficit and debt trajectories specified in the treaties [europeus] (…) The European Commission retains the right to decide on the budgets of these countries,” he said.

In other words, according to Catarina Martins, “it is not worth saying that Portugal is so good at studying that the European Union will never be able to decide” on the Portuguese budget, because “in any case, the European Union will decide and can decide what it wants” .

“The European Commission has never had the power to say whether Portugal has money to pay doctors, teachers, housing, roads and trains. This is an attack on our democratic schools. An attack on our ability to respond to crises,” he said.

Catarina Martins believes that it is “really irresponsible” to return to the old rules, as well as “to give the European Commission the right to decide on our public budget”, and emphasized that it was “the Portuguese PS MEP” who negotiated this proposal. “with the traditional right and the liberal group.”

“PS, PSD, CDS-PP and IL agree that Portugal cannot invest in its health, education and housing,” he accused.

Catarina Martins also remembered Miguel Portas, one of the founders of the party, who died in 2012, recalling that a member of the blockade was the first head of the party’s list in the European elections, and, praising former MEP Marisa Matias, said that she knew that she was not would be an “easy task.”
