The radical right received one in seven euros donated to parties in Europe between 2019 and 2022, according to an international investigation carried out by the newspaper’s consortium. Public. In Portugal, Chega received every seventh euro donated to national parties, for a total of 422 thousand euros, after PS and PSD with approximately one million euros, CDS-PP (466 thousand euros) and IL (447 thousand euros).
The investigation used a list of left-wing, radical and populist parties in each country compiled by political scientists. BE is classified as “almost radical left”, PKP as “radical left”, and Chega as “radical right populist”. All three parties are considered Eurosceptic.
Taking into account donations, quotas and activist donations, the share of funding for parties potentially considered “extremist” in Portugal between 2019 and 2022 was 61%. Only Slovenia and Greece have exceeded this record.
