Three former mayors of the Lordos parish of Viseu were sentenced this Friday by the Viseu court for the crime of embezzlement to almost five years’ imprisonment, with a suspended sentence subject to payment of the amounts they embezzled.
The former presidents, secretary and treasurer of the Lordosa parish council in the municipality of Viseu were sentenced to four years and six months and a 40-day fine, 10 euros per day for the president and 8 euros per day for the president. the other two are former mayors.
“The court decided to suspend execution of the sentence for a period of five years, subject to the defendant providing evidence of payment, that is, subject to payment of the amounts embezzled by them,” the judge said. .
Former board president Carlos Manuel Correia “must prove a minimum payment of seven thousand euros annually,” and former secretary and treasurer António Manuel Carvalho and José Anibal Almeida, respectively, “a minimum amount of 5.4 thousand euros” annually, they specified. judicial judge.
Based on the accusations from the prosecutor’s office, the court found that the former mayors received the amounts improperly, since they did not justify entertainment and daily expenses during three terms, from 2013 to 2021.
This is because, since Lordosa is a category A ward with less than five thousand voters, the mayors must perform their duties on a part-time basis, and the income and subsidies they receive are part-time.
The judge recalled that for this the president had to submit a proposal for approval to the Parish Assembly, which did not happen until he was questioned by a deputy who asked for clarification of information about the income of the executive branch.
Thus, the former president illegally received more than 35 thousand euros, and the then treasurer and secretary – more than 27 thousand euros.
