Hotel with mini-castle opens in Chavez, creating 30 jobs

An expat in the United States is opening a hotel in June in Chavez that will create 30 jobs and that features the construction of a small castle and the reuse of stone and wood for furniture.

The castle tower is one of the elements that stands out in the approach of the project built by Isolino Marsal and which this summer will strengthen the hotel potential of the municipality of Chávez. The mini castle has already become a source of curiosity.

“This project is an innovation, it has completely different characteristics,” the businessman told Lusa, who now divides his time between Portugal and the United States, where he has architecture and construction companies in Connecticut.

The village of Castelo, close to the project, and the history of the site where the castro was located served as inspiration for the construction of a small tower with three suites.

The resort combines tradition with modernity and sustainability, employs a farm-to-table concept and aims to make customers “feel at home”.

The complex covers an area of 30 hectares and includes several buildings, including the reception, living quarters, restaurant, wine cellar, wine cellar, event hall, regional kitchen, bakery, patisserie, cheese factory, and a swimming pool. outdoor swimming pool, organic vegetable garden, vineyard, olive grove and orchards.

All 45 suites are different, built into the cliffs but sharing the landscape of the Chavez Valley.

Inside the rooms there are also standout elements, such as washbasins carved into slate or showers set among granite rocks that remain indoors. There are doors made from old beams, churches or Fort San Francisco, as well as reused old wood cabinets.

In addition, the roots of olive trees and pine trees, some of which were uprooted to plant vineyards and orchards, or chestnut trees from Padrela, Valpasos, the businessman’s hometown, were transformed into pieces of furniture such as tables, counters or benches.

The businessman did not specify the size of the investment, noting only that “several millions” were invested in the project with the support of Turismo de Portugal and Câmara de Chaves.

And when asked why he decided to invest in this territory, he replied: “I really like our region, there are additional values, beautiful things that have yet to be explored. We have to show what we have in this area. to the world, I don’t think we were discovered.”

The opening of the project will create 30 full-time jobs, and according to Isolino Marsala, some workers have already settled in Chavez as part of the project.

Among the difficulties in completing the project, Isolino Marsal highlighted the shortage of labor both during the construction phase and during the opening phase to the public.

And he said that he even brought a team of his workers from the USA, who stayed in Chavez for two months to carry out some work.

The resort’s target audience is American tourists, as well as Canadians and Scandinavians, and it is aimed at the upper middle class.

Currently, the municipality of Chávez has 2,426 places to accommodate tourists of various types.

Chavez Chamber President Nuno Vaz told Lusa that seven more projects are in the final stages of construction and planned, which could mean an increase of 700 tourist sites in this border municipality.
