The AD candidate for the European Championships confirmed this Saturday that women’s rights are protected on his list after a female runner approached him and asked him for a “selfie” but said she would like to see “a woman in front.”
During a short walk along the Vila Nova de Gaia promenade, Sebastián Bugallo was approached by a jogger who stopped and asked him to take a photo together, but when asked if he planned to vote for AD, he expressed doubts.
“I don’t know, I’m a woman, we celebrate the 50th anniversary on April 25, and I think it’s important to have a woman at the helm. April 25 was one of the best events for women,” she said, adding that “the emancipation of women on April 25 was really good.”
The candidate responded that the AD team in the European Parliament is “full of women champions of 25 April” and emphasized the role of “the two founding parties of democracy”, PS and PSD.
Before returning to the campaign trail, the lady said that “the vote is not decided yet”, saying that she also believes in the youth.
At the end of the election initiative, the media asked the candidate if this potential voter saw “someone who would be a guarantor of the rights of these women” at the head of the AD list.
“I even regret your question because you really misunderstood. If a woman felt that her rights were not protected by this team, she would not have stopped to take a photo with us on the street,” Bugalho responded, asking the journalist to “ask” . a reasoned, fact-based question posed with good intentions.”
The AD candidate even said that he understands the runner’s position and that he enjoys “seeing women leading.”
“And in general, the PS list is headed by a woman, and in fact, I, the head of the AD list, am not a woman, but I am counting on women,” he said.
“Obviously, women’s rights are protected and enshrined in our list, which I have been saying since my first interview,” he said.
Regarding the rights won on April 25, the candidate also wanted to emphasize that the PSD, like “the largest opposition party,” the PS, “is the founding party of democracy.”
“There is no doubt that we defend democracy in Portugal and in Europe,” he said.
Responding to a question from journalists about the accusations made against him, namely by the heads of the list PS Marta Temido and BE Katarina Martins, that the AD does not guarantee that there will be no violations of women’s rights, Sebastian Bugalho asked: are specific examples given and “insinuations that never materialize” are not made.
Regarding the AD’s position against the inclusion of abortion as a fundamental right in the European Union, Sebastián Bugallo repeated the position that he expressed in the debates and interviews and which was also expressed by PSD President Luis Montenegro.
“Voluntary termination of pregnancy is a mechanism that manages two rights, since the management of two rights cannot be enshrined as a single right. But this is not the subject of this campaign, especially since such a vote has already taken place,” he said. thoughtful.
At the same time, the candidate was asked about criticism leveled at him by the head of the IL list, João Cotrim Figueiredo, that he was not sufficiently prepared for economic issues.
“I wish I had done them during the debate, I would have had the opportunity to do so. We don’t respond to personal attacks because we don’t make personal attacks. Anyone who makes personal attacks on me has the advantage of knowing that I will never respond to personal attacks,” he said.
After PSD President Luis Montenegro expressed on Friday his ambitions to elect MEP candidate Carla Rodriguez, eighth on the AD list, the candidate was asked if he already had a definite goal.
“I said from the very beginning that I have a minimal but honest goal: to maintain the Portuguese delegation in the European Parliament. Obviously, growth is a goal, a task that will satisfy us very much, and we have such ambitions,” he said . said.
Currently, the two main parties of the AD coalition, PSD and CDS-PP, have seven MEPs in Brussels out of the 21 elected by Portugal.
