IL insists Chega and PCP are ‘more similar’ than people think

The head of the list of the European Liberal Initiative said this Saturday that Chega and the PKP are “more similar” than people think, “it is not surprising” that André Ventura’s party grew where the PKP was strong.

“Let us look one by one at the proposals that Chega and the PKP voted on side by side in the Assembly of the Republic, namely regarding the support of certain corporations, the privatization of the TAR, the reduction of taxes and how they should organize certain functions of the state, and we will find much there are more similarities than people imagine,” explained João Cotrim de Figueiredo.

While visiting the fishing festival of Petiscos in Quarteira, in the municipality of Loule, Faro district, where Chega won the last legislative elections, the Liberal candidate stressed that due to the similarities between the two parties, “perhaps this is not the case.” Surprisingly, the regions where Chega began to grow most easily were precisely those areas where PCP was strong.”

This morning at the Lisbon book fair, Cotrim de Figueiredo said the two parties have “a lot in common,” deciding to offer the same book, The Kremlin Conspiracy, written by Joel K. Rosenberg, to the heads of the two parties’ list.

The first on the list, IL, believes that the concerns of the people who voted for Chegu, either out of protest or because they think the solutions proposed by this party are good, should not be discounted.

“So if people chose this option, it is not unfortunate as they are called in other places. These concerns are legitimate and must be addressed,” he added.

Moreover, Cotrim de Figueiredo stated that it is the disillusionment and discontent in any system that most fuels the multitude of extremist parties on the left and right.

He therefore understood that it was important that Portugal and Europe could create “a system that serves everyone, that does not leave so many behind and does not leave the feeling that it only works for the benefit of a few.”

“And this can be achieved through economic growth, which is truly key,” he emphasized.

In his opinion, if Portugal and Europe succeed in doing this, “these parties will have a smaller recruiting field.”
