At the Santa Maria Hospital, arrhythmia is treated with an innovative technique that takes 10 minutes.

The Santa Maria local health unit in Lisbon became the first SNS hospital to use an innovative technique for the non-invasive treatment of complex arrhythmias. This procedure was performed on Friday and has the advantage of speed of intervention, which is non-invasive and performed on an outpatient basis, with same-day discharge.

“This treatment consists of localized use of a high-dose radiation beam and takes 10 minutes with no immediate complications, with the patient leaving the hospital on foot after several hours, while traditional ventricular tachycardia ablation takes 4 to 6 hours, involves general anesthesia, multiple vascular accesses and a stay in the intensive care unit for two to three days after the operation,” explains Nuno Cortés-Díaz, Deputy Coordinator of Electrophysiology of the Arrhythmology Department of the ULSSM.
