The head of the AD list in the European elections, Sebastian Bugallo, exchanged proposals on Tuesday with the leadership of the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC) and assured that “empowering young people” in European decision-making is one of his priorities. .
During a visit to the AAC, founded in 1887, Sebastian Bugallo heard proposals for the creation of a European university placement programme, a European higher education student status, a European university psychological support network and a European Youth Committee.
José Machado, responsible for the AAC’s European policy portfolio, called the creation of a European Youth Committee “an important proposal” that should be implemented in the long term, which would contribute to the “effective empowerment of young people in community policy formulation processes.” “.
“As for empowering young people in European decision-making, I think that if there is evidence that this is also a priority for us, then it will be on our list,” responded Sebastian Bugalho.
The 28-year-old candidate from AD emphasized that everyone sitting at the table, be it the KLA leadership or those around him, is no older than 35 years.
“We are already here proving that young people are involved in decision-making and that they will not refuse further participation in decision-making in Portugal and Europe,” he emphasized.
In an academy with a long tradition such as that of Coimbra, Sebastian Bugalho said the AD values ”Portuguese history, memory and tradition” as a way to keep the culture healthy and “a good antidote to populism.”
According to Sebastian Bugalho, with this campaign he tried to demonstrate “that you can be innovative without being destructive, you can be young and energetic without wanting to break everything from head to toe, without tearing the page in half.” .
“We tried to do this with common sense, balanced and moderate, but at the same time energetic,” he emphasized.
At the end of the visit, answering a question from journalists whether he was worried that he would not be able to attract voters among young people, the AD candidate recalled that young people also come up to him, for example, to talk about the difficulties with housing that he collides. intends to raise it to a fundamental right.
“We need to work for the right to stay,” he emphasized, assuring that AD “takes special care of the elderly, but does not forget about the little ones.”
Upon arrival at the AAC building, Sebastian Bugalho met the surgeon Linhares Furtado, who led the team that performed the first kidney transplant in Portugal at the University Hospitals of Coimbra, and presented him with a book.
Sebastian Bugalho thanked him and assured him: “I read this on the plane to Brussels.”
