More than 1,000 journalists have already signed a petition against the new increase in the cost of the professional card, which will be delivered this Thursday to the card commission, asking them to think about the conditions and exercise of the profession.
“The undersigned journalists were surprised by the new increase in the cost of the Professional Journalist Card, which they consider unreasonable and offensive,” reads the document, which will be submitted this Thursday to the Commission on the Professional Journalist Card (CCPJ). in Lisbon.
A professional journalist license, renewable every two years, costs €76 from 1 February, compared to €70.50 charged in January 2022 after renewal.
The cost of the professional card has been questioned by journalists, but for the undersigned subscribers, this new increase “is a manifestation of CCPJ’s lack of sympathy” with the hardships the professionals face, such as low wages, which continue to be penalized by rising cost of living.
“We know the law that the CCPJ relies on to update the amount charged, but these are exceptional cases that the CCPJ cannot ignore in its decisions,” they stress, urging the commission to reconsider this increase.
The undersigned will be represented by a delegation of five journalists (Lusa, TVI and CNN, SIC, MAGG and RTP) representing the signatories.
On Feb. 1, when the new increase went into effect, CCPJ clarified that fees are the “only fundamental basis” of the budget and that, despite the update, its sustainability may “begin to be questioned.”
Following “some speeches by journalists” regarding the price update, the CCPJ secretariat posted an explanatory note on its website.
“This body is no stranger to the precarious conditions in which many journalists carry out their professional activities,” the secretariat said at the time, adding that “even though this body does not have any authority to interfere in labor matters, the various bodies that make up The CCPJ (Secretariat, Plenum and Disciplinary Section) have always been ready to participate in initiatives that can help improve the working conditions of journalists.”
In addition to a professional journalist’s license, all securities issued by the CCPJ were subject to an increase.
Issuing a temporary internship (12 months) now costs 15.20 euros compared to 14.20 euros last year, and the cost of a temporary internship (18 months) has increased from 21.15 euros to 22.80 euros.
The issuance and revalidation of the journalist equivalent title now involves a payment of €106.40, compared to €98.70 paid from January 2022.
In the same sense, the issuance and confirmation of the title of foreign correspondent has been updated to 76 euros (70.50 euros in 2022), and the title of employee or cooperation in communities to 30.40 euros (28.20 euros in 2022).
To these values add 4.20 euros including postage.
