Nine people killed and four seriously injured in truck crash in Angola

Nine people were killed and four seriously injured when a truck carrying aggregates crashed into a store this morning in the municipality of Humpata, in Angola’s Huila province.

The heavy vehicle was carrying sand and lost its brakes after colliding with a store, Angolan National Radio reported.

The municipality’s second police chief, Chief Inspector Sandra Gonsalves, confirmed the deaths and pointed to excessive speed and loss of brakes as possible causes of the accident.

Witness Simão Jose, quoted by Angolan news agency Angop, said all the victims were in the truck and ended up buried under a load of sand.

Ana Constantino, another witness, said that the truck was traveling from the commune of Alto Bimbe at high speed and hit two oxen before colliding with the establishment.

Seraphim Mundombe, a spokesman for INEMA, the agency treating the victims, said one of the survivors was in critical condition and was being treated at Lubango Central Hospital.

The municipality of Humpata is located 22 kilometers from Lubango, on the border of Huila and Namibe.
