Cheringonsa approves PS IRS cut

The Left and IL votes, with Chega abstaining, approved the PS’s proposed cut to the IRS. AD is already talking about “Cheringons”. “Cega and the Socialist Party are together,” said Hugo Soares, leader of the PSD, after the vote, which also failed the government’s plan. The parliamentarian dramatized the situation by declaring that “Portugal may learn that Chega and the PS have abandoned the middle class.” Paulo Nuncio of CDS called the situation “cheringonza” in all its glory.

The PS emphasizes that there was no agreement with Chega, since Andre Ventura’s party abstained, and Pedro Nuno Santos blames the executive for a lack of understanding. “Chega refrained from the proposals of the SDP and the PS, and we are not negotiating with Chega. IL voted for the PSD proposals and voted for the PS proposals. What is the difference?” asked the general secretary of the Social Democratic Party in Bragança during the election campaign. Pedro Nuno says there needs to be a “government that has more dialogue” and that the executive’s proposal was “unfair”.

The SDP did make some changes to the government’s original proposal, but failed to gather a majority. Thus, the largest drop in rates is observed in the second and sixth levels – by 1.5 percentage points. According to PS, with a gross monthly income of 1,500 euros, the annual savings reach 130.9 euros. Unlike the PSD proposal, changes in rates only occur up to the sixth bracket, and thanks to the progressive nature of the tax, everyone benefits in the end.

Chega denies being a “crutch” of PS
“The government should cry less and govern more, because that is how we avoided this situation,” was the response of Andre Ventura to the PSD and SDS, who considered Chegu to be the “crutch” of the PS. Ventura said he wants to “lower taxes” whether the proposal is made by “Party A or Party B.”

PS refuses deductions
BE was “surprised” by PS’s vote against a measure to deduct home loans from the IRS. “This is injustice,” said MP Joana Mortagua.

IL votes for
The Liberal Initiative considered it “a political affair with artificial tension.” Rui Rocha said that “the differences in proposals are in most cases two or three euros” and that the party will always vote for tax cuts.
