The BE candidate for the European elections said this Thursday that we should think about whether “whoever is next to” the President of the European Commission is “protecting ‘human rights'” while insisting on the need for sanctions against Israel.
“The European Union maintains the association agreement [com Israel]and this should make us think about who is next to Ursula von der Leyen today and whether they defend human rights and peace,” said Catarina Martins, speaking to journalists in Feira de Barcelos, Braga district.
The blocker commented on the presence this Thursday of the President of the European Commission and candidate of the European People’s Party for a second term, von der Leyen, in the campaign of the Democratic Alliance (PSD, CDS-PP and PPM) for the European elections in Porto, together with the President of the PSD and Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and the head list by Sebastian Bugallo.
Katharina Martins stressed that the German leader “is the president of the European Commission, which supports the association agreement with Israel, which causes genocide in the Gaza Strip.”
“And we have not yet heard a word from the President of the European Commission condemning Israel and imposing sanctions on Israel, which is fundamental. We said, and I repeat, the legislation to which the European Union has forced itself, international treaties, obliges that there be sanctions and that there is an arms embargo when we are faced with war crimes and genocide,” said the candidate for the European Parliament.
Katharina Martins, who has already offered political condemnation of the German government for supplying arms to Israel, accused von der Leyen of being “the representative of a European project that negotiates with large sectors of the right and even the far right and which, as an option, withdraws European funds that served such fundamental areas as health and education to finance the German war industry.”
“In the Gaza Strip, a child dies every hour, and there is European money, there are German weapons, and this needs to be stopped. Today, whoever is on von der Leyen’s side must say something about this, otherwise they are complicit,” he accused.
