PS at the Lisbon Chamber proposes a building condition survey in Muraria

The PS in the Lisbon Chamber will propose this Wednesday that the municipality conduct a survey of the “living and health conditions” of buildings in Muraria following a fire that killed two Indian immigrants on Saturday.

The proposal that PS in Lisbon will present this Wednesday at the decentralized meeting of the Lisbon City Council (CML) is to carry out a survey of the “living and health conditions” of buildings in the Muraria area, located in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, a work that will be carried out in cooperation with the Regiment of Firefighters and Civil Protection, said Luce Pedro Anastasio, an adviser without portfolio.

“In accordance with the legal documents in its possession, which place this responsibility on it, the Socialist Party in the CML is addressing the President. [Carlos Moedas, PSD] conduct a survey of the suitability and sanitary condition of these buildings, as we are facing a clear situation that poses a potential danger to people and goods, ”says the text of the proposal, which Lusa had access to.

While acknowledging that the problem “existed in the past”, Pedro Anastasio, who is also a PS MP for the Assembly of the Republic, says the problem is getting worse.

“The data we are learning shows an urgency to act,” Lusa’s socialist adviser said, criticizing municipality housing adviser Filipe Roseta (PSD) for “shaking water off his raincoat.”

On Tuesday, Filipa Roseta questioned the intervention of the Service for Foreigners and Border Guards (SEF) during a meeting of Lisbon’s municipal assembly after municipal deputies said there were no conditions for receiving immigrants.

The Socialist Party’s proposal comes after a fire on the first floor of a building on Rua do Terreirinho on Saturday, an accident that killed two Indian immigrants and injured 14, which also led to the evacuation of 24 people. tenants of the building and the relocation of 13 people provided by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.

This fire sparked a discussion about overcrowding, as 22 displaced people were allegedly living in the house where the accident occurred.

On Monday, Santa Maria Mayor Parish Council President Miguel Coelho (PS) acknowledged the reality of “overcrowding in most homes” in the parish.

“There are many houses in this part of the city and in the parish that are inhabited by immigrant citizens. It can be seen that there is an exploitation of space, an intensive economic exploitation of these spaces,” Mayor Luce emphasized, calling for increased supervision by the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) and the municipal police over local housing in Lisbon.

The municipality has already confirmed to Lusa that the faction where the fire occurred is a rental property, and the cause of the fire that started in the kitchen of the house has yet to be confirmed.
