The Portuguese today elect 21 national MEPs in the European Union

More than 10 million registered voters in Portugal and abroad are heading to the polls this Sunday to elect 21 national representatives to the European Parliament.

Polling stations for the second elections in three months will be open from 08:00 to 19:00 in mainland Portugal and Madeira, while in the Azores they open and close an hour later Lisbon time due to the time difference.

According to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a total of 10,819,317 nationals and 11,255 foreign citizens are registered on the voter list for this Sunday’s elections, making a total of 10,830,572 voters.

About 1.5 million Portuguese voters are registered abroad, of which just over 900 thousand vote in Europe and 643 thousand are registered outside the European continent.

In these elections, thanks to the existence of dematerialized voter lists, voters will be able to vote anywhere in the country, that is, without the need to inform in advance or register to vote outside their regular polling station, simply by presenting an official identification document. with updated photo.

In Portugal, more than 252,000 voters, 17 parties and coalitions, are participating in these European elections, for which they pre-registered to vote last Sunday.

In 2019, in the previous European elections, Portugal recorded its worst abstention rate (68.6%) since joining the European Union, in contrast to participation in Europe at around 50%.

Besides regional elections in the Azores and Madeira, this is Portugal’s second national election this year, following early legislative elections on March 10, called after the resignation of then Prime Minister António Costa (PS). it was made public that it was the subject of a judicial investigation.

Between Thursday and Sunday, some 373 million European voters in the 27 European Union member states will elect 720 new members of the European Parliament.
