The head of the PAN list in the European elections, Pedro Fidalgo Márquez, admitted defeat in the European Parliament elections this Sunday, saying that the party had already lost its mandate in 2020, after the resignation of Francisco Guerreiro.
“Our mandate was lost in 2020 and the goal of rescuing it was a difficult task, but we never turned away from difficult goals and objectives, because the causes that PAN represents were those who will lose and lose,” emphasized Pedro Fidalgo Márquez .
The People-Animals-Nature party failed to elect a member of the European Parliament, falling behind the ADN, which received 54,046 votes.
At 00:15, the PAN had 47,959 votes (1.22%), according to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (SIGMAI), which is 120,397 votes less than in the 2019 elections.
“We would like to be able to vote so that we can continue to work together with the national parliament, regional parliaments, as well as our local mayors who work every day to protect interests that no one else protects. I make it very clear that you can count on PAN. PAN is always present at the forefront, without fear of facing any vested interests in protecting animal rights, protecting nature and protecting human rights,” he said.
Pedro Fidalgo Márquez recalled his project and that of 28 others, saying that he is “on the ground every day.”
“While we have a million stray animals in the country, while we have bullfights torturing animals in arenas, while we have ecocidal attacks on the environment, such as the Alcochete airport, which will destroy the country’s largest reserve of fresh water, while we have attacks on human rights and questioning violence against women, PAN will always matter, it will always be here,” he stressed.
Regarding the DNA result, Pedro Fidalgo Márquez said it was necessary to have a “disturbing appearance”.
“When we have a party that denies climate change, a party that denies science, a party that denies Covid-19, it worries us when we see these rising forces, even some of their supporters, continue to say, that the Earth is flat,” he added.
Pedro Fidalgo Márquez, 37 years old, born in Oeiras, is a social and cultural entrepreneur with a university degree in dance and a master’s degree in political science, and is currently studying for a doctorate in dance at the Faculty of Human Motor Sciences of the University of Lisbon. .
He is a member of the national political commission of the PAN and a member of the council of the highest political decision-making body between party congresses.
Before his candidacy for the European Parliament, Fidalgo Marques was already number three from PAN in the Lisbon constituency in the March legislative elections and was elected to the parish assembly of the Union of the parishes of Oeiras and São Julian da Barra, Paço de Arcos and Caxias . in 2017.
In 2019, Francisco Guerreiro topped the PAN list and was the only elected member of this political force in the European elections, the first in which the party received representation in Brussels (about 5% of the vote).
The following year, the MEP announced his resignation from PAN due to “political differences” with the party’s leadership, remaining in the European Parliament as an independent candidate.
