“In an election that we knew was very difficult and at a difficult time for the whole of Europe, BE retains representation in the European Parliament,” said Catarina Martins in her closing speech on election night at the Forum in Lisbon.
The head of the list spoke a few minutes before the website of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior (SGMAI) officially confirmed his election, accompanied by BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua in a room where about a hundred supporters celebrated despite the party. having lost its mandate compared to 2019.
Asked about the results of far-right parties at the European level, for example in France, Katarina Martins said that BE was following these results “with great concern” as parties “with a very violent matrix and links to Vladimir Putin” are on the line.” , but assured that “the time has come to fight.”
“We will be with our comrades on the left across Europe, trying to resist this, we knew that this election was fraught with such risks, this is a time of struggle, this is what we are here for,” he assured.
Thanking the delegation and BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua for their support along the way, saying that she was “tireless”, Katarina Martins assured that her mandate would be “for peace, for an end to genocide in Palestine” and for “self-determination of peoples” – one of the main party slogans in this campaign.
The blocker also rejected the Pact on Migration and Asylum and assured that it would not allow “any infringements on the freedoms and rights of women or anyone else.”
“Our Europe and our country are equal, and it is for equality that we fight,” he said.
The leader assured that she will fight for climate, health, education and that the party will strive for “the broadest alliances across Europe to follow this path.”
“I would therefore like to congratulate all the parties of the left, the European and environmental left, of which we are part and which have carried out this very difficult but determined campaign in all European countries,” he said, also welcoming the head of the PS list to the European Parliament, Marte Temido, “for that she is the candidate with the most votes of the evening.”
