“The bus driver overtook the wrong way, in a prohibited place (…) on a sharp turn. He collided with a vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction. As a result, 23 people died,” Cassimo explained this Monday to reporters Ali from the provincial police command Republic of Mozambique (PRM) Beira.
The accident occurred in Mafambisa, Dondo district in central Mozambique, while overtaking, when the bus collided with a heavy vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.
“Yes, there was negligence on the part of the driver. [do autocarro]”, said Cassimo Ali, explaining that of the 23 dead, including three children, 17 died on the spot, and the rest died on the way to the Beira central hospital.
23 people were killed on board the Dondo Public Transport (TPD) bus, while the collision also injured 49 people, all of whom were taken to Beira Central Hospital, seven of whom were in a condition considered serious.
Mozambique has recorded more than 4,800 deaths due to road traffic accidents in the past five years, according to data released May 22 by the Mozambican government, which calls for public participation in the fight against the scourge.
