IL-elect MEP João Cotrim de Figueiredo on Tuesday accused the government of prioritizing António Costa’s citizenship over his usefulness to the European project with what he described as parish support as announced.
“They prioritize nationality over utility. I think it’s parochial, unfortunately, when people’s nationality matters more than their ideas. We may have a person with completely unacceptable ideas, and only because he is from our country, who needs to be supported. This is wrong. makes sense,” João Cotrim de Figueiredo told the European Parliament in Brussels.
The former president of the Liberal Initiative believed that former Prime Minister António Costa “does not like change,” so “it does not serve the European project.”
The closeness between the French president, also a liberal, and António Costa, who has repeatedly praised the former Portuguese prime minister’s dialogue skills, is well known.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has already expressed his support for António Costa if the former Socialist general secretary goes ahead. Germany and France generally agree with this decision, so support from Emmanuel Macron is expected.
But João Cotrim de Figueiredo called on all liberals to be “fairly consistent” and reject a man who “does not have a liberal position on the future of Europe.”
“I would be very sorry if other liberals did not think so,” he admitted, adding that he would try to influence the decision of the liberal political group Renovar Europe in this sense.
