This Wednesday, the PS accused the government of creating, through propaganda, a “false idea that it governs” and predicted that executive measures would lead the country to an excessive budget deficit in 2025.
During the period of political statements at the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic, socialist MP Ana Catarina Mendes, elected on Sunday to the European Parliament, said that in the midst of the election campaign and “ignoring the warnings of the National Electoral Commission”, the government took on the task of “creating a flurry of statements” to “create a false impression that it will rule.”
“The government does not announce or hold an inauguration. The government is not opposing the previous government. The government really finds an answer to the problems of the Portuguese. (…) What remains of all these statements except defeat on election night? Even promises without a deadline, so that their validity could never be verified by the Assembly of the Republic,” said the Socialist MP in what was probably her last speech in the Assembly of the Republic.
Ana Catarina Mendes accused the government of creating a narrative that calls into question “the authority of Portugal in the European Union,” although the European Commission itself has already “refuted it three times.”
“First in public reports with confirmation from the commissioner that the situation in Portugal is stable. Then in the execution of the PRR, when the commissioner confirmed that execution in Portugal was above the European average. And, finally, in the field of migration,” the deputy listed.
The Socialist recalled the Bank of Portugal’s concerns about the possible return of the budget deficit as a result of new executive measures, saying that the government was “eroding the confidence gained over the last few years” and said the country would “be back next year.” to excessive budget deficits.”
“With all the measures approved by the end of April, the budget surplus this year is projected to be 1%. And it goes even further. This confirms what the PS has been saying since the legislative election campaign. With AD program measures, Portugal will return to excessive budget deficits next year,” he said.
Ana Catarina Mendes welcomed the government’s willingness to support the possible candidacy of António Costa for the presidency of the European Council, as he is “the right person in the next five years” for the position to provide “common answers” to the problems.
In response from the right, the PSD asked Pedro Nuno Santos to be careful with his “very narrow” victory at the last European Championship, bearing in mind the departure of Antonio José Seguro from the leadership of the PS a few months after Francisco Assis’ victory at the European Championship. Europeans.
The SDS questions whether the PS understands, based on the latest election results, that it “does not have the conditions to create an alternative” government and therefore must take on the role of opposition.
“There is one thing that the forces uniting the government really need to understand. This is what the Portuguese asked for a different way of governing, for a broader dialogue,” answered Ana Catarina Mendes.
Chega accused the government of supporting the former prime minister, who is under “suspicion of involvement in a criminal case,” referring to support for António Costa’s possible move to the European Council.
In response, Ana Catarina Mendes considered it a “shame” that the Chegi deputy “said what he said” and made “accusations against a completely innocent person without even laughing.”
On the left, the PCP described Ana Catarina Mendes in her initial speech as “very distracted from the euro”, while BE criticized the European Union’s “disgraceful” new migration pact, which brought together “the unanimity of the center parties”.
In her response, the socialist assured that she was “very concerned about the direction of many issues on the European agenda” and admitted that the migration pact “puts her in an awkward position as a European.”
