Albuquerque optimistic about approval of Madeira government program

The President of the Madeira government said this Friday that he is optimistic about the approval of the government program next week, considering that there is no reason to reject it, since it brings together “proposals from all parties.”

“I am optimistic, I think that there will be and there must be common sense to protect the common interests,” said Miguel Albuquerque (PSD), speaking to reporters after presenting the document to the President of the Regional Legislative Assembly. Assembly of Madeira in Funchal.

The head of the executive branch confirmed that political forces have “no reason” not to approve the government program.

“There is no reason other than that of party ego, the desire for power or any other reason to fail the government’s proposal in parliament,” confirmed Miguel Albuquerque.

The PS and Chega have already stated that they will vote against the document, and given that the PSD does not have an absolute majority in the Madeira Parliament, if the JPP also joins in voting against (as it did last year), the government program will be rejected.

When asked whether the inclusion of a “ferry” between Madeira and the continent in the government program should guarantee the feasibility of the JPP document, Albuquerque answered “no”, indicating that this measure was integrated for implementation.

Despite this, the regional executive president replied that he still had “no guarantee” when asked whether he had already spoken to the AKP and whether the party could make the government viable.

Miguel Albuquerque reiterated that citizens, businessmen and various organizations “at this moment they want the government to govern and do what is necessary, which is to unblock a number of decisions that need to be made.”

Work on a new hospital and medical department in Porto Santo, salary updates and other issues will be suspended if the document is not approved next week, he said.

“We cannot play party games for power here, because it is true: the SDP won the elections,” he stressed.

The discussion of the government program takes place from Tuesday to Thursday in the Parliament of Madeira.

In the regional legislative assemblies, the SDP elected 19 deputies on May 26 and has five terms left before achieving an absolute majority. The PS received 11 deputies, the AKP nine, Chega four and SDS-PP two, while IL and PAN elected one deputy each.

After the elections, the PSD signed a parliamentary agreement with the Christian Democrats, but it still lacks an absolute majority – both parties have 21 seats, but 24 are needed.

After the vote, the PS and JPP (which together have 20 MPs) announced an agreement to try to remove the SDP from power, but were unsuccessful.

The final abandonment of the Madeira government program implies the fall of the executive, which will remain in power until a new one is appointed or until new early elections, which are possible only in early 2025.

The May elections came eight months after Madeira’s legislative elections on September 24, 2023, after the president of the republic dissolved the regional parliament following a political crisis triggered in January when Miguel Albuquerque became a defendant in an alleged corruption case. . Ultimately, the governor resigned and the executive director took over.

The Social Democrat has led the regional government since 2015, when the party still had the absolute majority it has always had in the archipelago. In 2019, to achieve this goal it was necessary to form a post-election coalition with the SDS-PP (which was part of the regional government), and in 2023, with both parties acting together, Albuquerque entered into an agreement on parliamentary influence with Skovoroda.

In last month’s vote, PSD and CDS ran separately.

In the previous term, a vote of confidence was given to the Program of the Regional Government of Madeira for the four-year period 2023-2027. was approved last November only by SDP, CDS-PP and PAN.

The entire opposition then present in the assembly voted against the document – PS, JPP, Chega, IL, BE and PCP.
