The President of Slovakia takes office and promises the reunification of the country

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini took office this Saturday, replacing Zuzana Caputova, and promised the reunification of the politically divided country.

“Politics should not divide […] and become the engine of negative and destructive emotions,” Pellegrini said in his inaugural speech.

Slovakia’s new president won the April presidential election with 53% of the vote, replacing liberal Zuzana Caputova, who did not run again in that election.

Peter Pellegrini also emphasized that the country is divided by a “high mental wall.”

The new president of Slovakia said that this wall is now “splattered with blood” and said that together it must be torn down.

Pellegrini was referring to the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico, which occurred on May 15.

The president also vowed to “reunite” a country marked by divisions between the pro-Kremlin government and the pro-Western opposition.

“Slovakia was, is and will remain a strong element of the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance, but it is not afraid to speak with a sovereign voice,” he concluded.
