This Monday, the President of the Republic described Portugal as a safe country with a high level of stability in times of uncertainty, regardless of early elections or even political crises.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke at the Portuguese American Development Foundation (FLAD) in Lisbon during a debate with Portuguese-American politicians elected to the legislative chambers of the United States of America.
Speaking in English, after commenting on the international situation, the head of state spoke about the domestic political situation after early elections this year, starting with a review of the financial and budgetary situation.
“Financial stability is an undeniable fact among the main parties, which gives us the opportunity to intervene more quickly in some public policy and professional sectors,” he said.
“A balanced budget is very, very important. The financial stability that we have had in recent years since the pandemic and that we maintain now is key to our future,” he said.
According to the head of state, “any type of radicalization that has a serious impact on public debate and the public agenda will force the two main parties [PS e PSD] and other socio-political forces to find compromises.”
In this regard, he noted that in these European elections, “more than 55% voted in this vast area,” adding: “This gives us the legitimacy of honoring these commitments as a good strategy for the country.”
“Other important decisions, such as the location of the airport, the use of European funds, investments in defense, attracting foreign investment and the consistency of our foreign policy, are based on a broad consensus in Parliament, as usual, but also in Portuguese society, which is beneficial for our stability and international trust,” he says.
On the other hand, the President of the Republic noted that public opinion surveys indicate a “high level of Europeanism” in Portugal, as well as “a very high level of support for Ukraine – the highest in Europe -, trust in NATO and the European Union, a society tolerant of immigration , and the value of an open economy as a stable national dimension, even in a snap election cycle.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted the number of North Americans and other foreigners who have visited and bought homes in Portugal, noting that “this means that people feel safe in Portugal, they feel that it is a peaceful country” and “this is a sign that how stable Portugal is at the moment.”
According to the head of state, this stability “does not depend on early elections, political disputes, or even political crises.”
“And this is the most valuable strength we have: a high level of stability in these uncertain times,” he concluded.
