Barbecue allows identification of man involved in arson in Torre de Moncorvo

The PNP has identified the 60-year-old man responsible for the arson in Torre de Moncorvo. The suspect allegedly cooked a barbecue in a farming area and did a poor job of extinguishing the fire. The flames raged for six hours and consumed 41 hectares of forest, the equivalent of 41 football fields.

A forest fire alert in Cabanas de Baixo in the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo occurred on Saturday at 14:30 after a group of farm workers lit a fire to cook a barbecue for lunch.

The fire could not be extinguished and set fire to the surrounding vegetation.

The flame quickly acquired large proportions and spread with great intensity towards inaccessible forest areas.

Civil defense mobilized nearly 80 operators, supported by three aircraft – a pair of Fire Boss and a Canadair – which fought the fire for six hours.

Only with the onset of darkness was it possible to localize the fire.

The person responsible for the barbecue that caused the fire immediately took responsibility and was identified by the PNR.

The GNR warns that such activities in dangerous locations are prohibited and can have serious consequences for offenders.

The Guard also emphasizes that fires and arson are extremely dangerous and can endanger the lives of the population.

Therefore, between June 1 and October 31, burning and fires require permission from municipal councils and must be controlled by firefighters to prevent fires from getting out of control and starting.
