Chega will invite his president Andre Ventura to take seats in the Council of State, an official party source told Luse.
Elections for the five members who will be appointed by the Assembly of the Republic to the Council of State, the political advisory body of the President of the Republic, are scheduled for Wednesday in Parliament, with votes counted using the Hondt method.
According to the same Chegi source, a single list of this party, the SDP and the PS will be presented.
Two PS names must be chosen: two nominated by the SDP parliamentary group, and one by Chega.
The PS nominated its secretary general Pedro Nuno Santos and party president Carlos Cesar, while the PSD nominated Lisbon City Council President Carlos Moedas and again its number one activist Francisco Pinto Balsemana.
Speaking to reporters in the Assembly of the Republic, the leader of Chegi said that his party “from the moment it exceeds a fifth of the Assembly of the Republic will have a seat in the State Council” and noted that “it made sense” who was the leader in this first times when it is part of the advisory body of the President of the Republic.
“What can be expected is an objective understanding that this is an advisory body to the President of the Republic, without losing the identity that we have here in parliament,” he emphasized.
Andre Ventura also considered it “important that Chega be represented in all government bodies.”
“Chega wants to be the government, he wants to transform our republic, but he respects democracy and lives in the organs of democracy. The Council of State is another organ of our democracy, like Parliament, like others, and Chega is a natural part of this democracy, given the number of votes it received in the last legislative elections on March 10,” he said.
In the previous legislature, five representatives proposed by the PS and PSD were elected on a joint list (Manuel Alegre, Carlos Cesar, Sampaio da Novoa, Francisco Pinto Balseman and Miguel Cadille), while Chega presented an alternative list but failed to elect anyone. .
If the agreement were now repeated with the participation of only the PS and SDP, Chega on his own list would still be able to elect one of the five names to the State Council with a high probability, since it currently includes more than one-fifth of the deputies.
According to the constitution, the Council of State is composed of “five citizens elected by the Assembly of the Republic in accordance with the principle of proportional representation for a period corresponding to the duration of the legislative body.”
