The JPP will be heard by the representative of the Republic of Madeira on Thursday.

The JPP will meet with the representative of the Republic of Madeira on Thursday in Funchal and ask for clarification on what Miguel Albuquerque (PSD) said to Ireneu Barreto before his appointment as Chief Executive.

Speaking to reporters after a break in the discussion of the Government Program held in the Parliament of Madeira, JPP Secretary General Elvio Souza said that he had requested the representative of the Republic for a hearing scheduled by the Consulting Judge for 15:00 on Thursday.

According to Elvio Souza, JPP intends to “find out who lied in this story.”

“Miguel Albuquerque talks about stability and uses stability on the cover of the government program because, as he mentioned, he had a stable solution for the region from the Liberal Initiative and Chega,” he noted.

On May 28, after hearing all the parties with seats in parliament and deciding to nominate Miguel Albuquerque, Ireneu Barreto declared that “the decision presented by the party with the most votes, the PSD, which has an agreement on parliamentary influence with the SDS, and in non-hostile in principle, Chega, PAN and IL will have all the conditions for their program to be approved by the Legislative Assembly.”

Also, Miguel Albuquerque, speaking to reporters the next day, assured that “there will be no problems” with the approval of the government program and the regional budget, anticipating support for parties declaring their “anti-socialist” orientation.

However, late on Wednesday the president of the Madeira government announced the decision to withdraw the executive’s policy proposal, acknowledging that it could not be approved on Thursday.

The document will be rejected as PS, JPP and Chega have declared their vote against it. The three parties have a total of 24 deputies out of the 47 that make up the hemicycle, equivalent to an absolute majority.

Speaking to reporters after Miguel Albuquerque’s statement, the JPP leader also considered it “cowardice” for the regional government to announce at a press conference that the proposal was being withdrawn from discussion without submitting it to “parliamentary decision.”

In early regional elections on May 26, the SDP elected 19 deputies, giving it five terms to achieve an absolute majority (which requires 24), the PS received 11, the AKP nine, Chega four and SDS-PP two. , and IL and PAN elected one deputy each.

After the elections, the PSD signed a parliamentary agreement with the Christian Democrats, but it still lacks an absolute majority. Both parties have a total of 21 seats.

Also after the vote, the PSI and the PPP (20 seats in total) announced an agreement to try to remove the PSD from power, but the representative of the Republic, Ireneu Barreto, realized that this was not viable and nominated Miguel Albuquerque. .

The May elections took place eight months after Madeira’s legislative elections on September 24, 2023, after the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, dissolved the Madeira Parliament following a political crisis that arose in January when Miguel Albuquerque was named as a defendant. in a case of alleged corruption.
