PSD does not comment on Nuno Rebela de Souza, but expects “common sense” and respect for the law in the case of the twins

The leader of the PSD parliament refused this Thursday to comment on the possible absence of Nuno Rebelo de Sousa from the commission of inquiry into the twins case, but said that he expects “common sense” and respect for the law.

This position of Hugo Soares was brought to the attention of journalists at the end of a meeting of the PSD parliamentary group after they were confronted with the fact that the son of the President of the Republic, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, had informed the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the twins case – his refusal to explain, although he admitted that he attended the hearing “in the future.”

Regarding this case, Hugo Soares began with the following statement: “The PSD is absolutely convinced that common sense and respect for the legal regime of parliamentary commissions of inquiry – and thus for the law – will prevail.”

“As long as there is respect for the legal regime of parliamentary commissions of inquiry and the law, I am absolutely convinced that this issue will be resolved – and this is the desire of the SDP,” he emphasized.

Regarding the behavior of the son of the head of state, the chairman of the SDP parliamentary group did not take it for granted that he would be absent from the commission of inquiry, possibly committing a crime of insubordination.

“We will wait for the position of Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Souza. I am confident that respect for the rules of parliamentary commissions of inquiry will prevail,” he reiterated.

On Wednesday, a source connected to the trial confirmed to Lusa that Nuno Rebelo de Sousa has been named as a defendant in the case of twins who were treated in hospital in Portugal with a drug worth four million euros.

The news came to light after a parliamentary commission investigating the twins case said it could file a complaint with the prosecutor’s office for insubordination against the son of the president of the republic if he refuses to be heard.

The son of the President of the Republic told the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the twins case that he refused to give an explanation, admitting that he would attend the hearings “in the future.”

In front of reporters, the leader of the Social Democratic parliament also questioned whether the commission of inquiry into the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins “has any meaning and whether it is being used by some parties to exacerbate populism.”

And here he went even further, leaving the following question: “It is important to know whether this investigative commission should suspend its work while the investigation with the prosecutor’s office is ongoing.”

“But commissions of inquiry have their own rules and they should be respected,” he added.
