PS does not refuse to listen to Nuno Rebelo de Souza in the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins

On Thursday, the PS assured that it will not refuse to listen to the son of the President of the Republic, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, in the case of the twins, considering it unacceptable that he kept silent about the fact that he is already an accused and refused to provide information. clarification.

Speaking to reporters, PS MP João Paulo Correia said Nuno Rebelo de Sousa “informed parliament that he refused to testify to the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the twins case, and did so without disclosing his status as an accused.”

“We know from the media that he has been accused for more than a month. Refusing to testify before the inquiry committee is contempt of parliament, but his omission that he is already a defendant in the case becomes even more important. an unacceptable process opened by the prosecutor’s office,” he criticized.

According to the PS, “in order for the country to know the truth, it is necessary for Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Souza to go to the parliamentary commission of inquiry and answer the deputies if he wishes.”

“We know that the status of an accused creates special obligations and rights, but this does not exclude the presence of Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Souza, and the PS will not give up this because it is a key element in the case of the twins,” he warned.

According to João Paulo Correia, “if on an ethical and moral level such behavior is highly reprehensible,” from a legal point of view, the socialists do not find “any justification for Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Sousa’s refusal to testify.”

“Tomorrow [sexta-feira] a commission of inquiry meets to make a decision. The PS will argue that if Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Sousa continues to refuse to testify before the commission of inquiry or continues this dilatory maneuver of trying to delay his testimony and his presence before the commission of inquiry for as long as possible, Parliament will have to ask for the cooperation of the prosecutor’s office , as provided by law, because this refusal, if continued, constitutes a crime of insubordination, and Parliament must be respected,” he foresaw.

According to the PS deputy, the letter sent to the investigative commission “communicates an almost categorical refusal.”

Also, IL, through the voice of deputy Joana Cordeiro, said that Nuno Rebelo de Sousa’s response to the parliamentary commission of inquiry “is not entirely clear about the refusal” to be heard in parliament, so the liberals believe that this should be clarified.

The deputy stressed that the condition of Nuno Rebelo de Sousa as a defendant is not a reason for missing the hearing, recalling that the former Secretary of State António Lacerda Sales was in the same condition.

“We cannot accept that an organization simply thinks it is above a parliamentary commission of inquiry and refuses to come. there is nothing to hide, if you believe that you have not done anything illegal or believe that it is wrong, then we do not understand why you do not come directly and personally to the commission of inquiry to give all these explanations,” he said.

On Wednesday, a source connected to the trial confirmed to Lusa that Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, the son of the President of the Republic, has been named as a defendant in the case of twins who were treated in a hospital in Portugal with medicine worth four million euros. .

The news came to light after a parliamentary commission investigating the twins case said it could file a complaint with the prosecutor’s office for insubordination against the son of the president of the republic if he refuses to be heard.

Rui Paulo Souza, president of the commission, said the parties will vote on Friday on what response will be given to lawyer Nuno Rebel de Souza.

The son of the President of the Republic told the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the twins case that he refused to give an explanation, admitting that he would attend the hearings “in the future.”
