This Thursday, the parties expressed support for the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the management of the Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisbon, with the PS saying it would support it if it had “a scale and a wider time frame.” .
This Thursday, the Assembly of the Republic discussed the proposals of Chega, the Liberal Initiative and the BE for the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the financial management of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) and the role of political oversight, which will be voted on Friday.
The leader of Chegi stated that there was “chaos” in the leadership of the SCML, and believed that the problem was “a huge octopus of appointments, loss of money, losses that harm only one subject – the Portuguese people”, and argued that “Parliament must to the end to investigate where the money went, who benefited from it and why the management was so poorly organized.”
“It is essential that the Assembly of the Republic and the Portuguese are provided with all the clarifications on various and varied topics: the internationalization of the Santa Casa Games, the role of each of the participants in this process, the determination of responsibility for financial losses, but also about possible political motives and interference,” defended parliamentary leader IL.
Mariana Leitan also believes that “it is important to carefully examine the relationship between the ombudsman’s office, the Santa Casa council, political and ministerial tutelage and find out how the apparent permeability of Santa Casa, its subsidiaries and the medical institutions it owns, decisions were apparently influenced by partisanship motives.”
BE considered that “the specific responsibilities of each of the agents involved were not clear, and did not refuse long enough to be able to determine the origin of these problems.”
“Defining responsibilities in management and recruitment, saving Santa Casa and not burying it, protecting the work of Santa Casa and the workers rather than dismissing them is what we want to do with the parliamentary commission of inquiry into Santa Casa. Casa”, defended deputy Jose Soeiro.
MP Isaura Morais of the PSD noted that this investigation should be “capable of deeply analyzing the path that led Santa Casa to the situation in which it finds itself” and contribute to a “thorough investigation of the truth.”
“This is what the country demands of us, not a constant stream of news that continues to undermine the dignity of the institution. […] It is precisely because of all these problems, as well as management decisions that apparently turned out to be wrong, that the SDP parliamentary group must contribute to clarifying the many doubts that exist, the dark shadows hanging over the process,” he emphasized.
Regarding the PS, MP Miguel Cabrita expressed his “willingness to facilitate the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry, provided that it has a wide scope and time frame, allowing an understanding of the roots of the problems, the positive or negative contributions of the different actors and the impact of different factors and the contours of different processes” .
“PS was, was and will be available for this work. Now the PS will not be available to allow Santa Casa, an organization of enormous prestige and enormous social significance, to turn into an arena of political struggle, which is used as an instrument of populist programs, party, economic or other interests, much less as a throwing weapon to hide failures and the inaction of the Lisbon municipal government,” he said.
Regarding the CDS-PP, the leader of parliament said that “it is necessary to define all responsibilities and find those responsible for the extremely destructive management of SCML in recent years” and said that he would vote to open an investigation.
Alfredo Maia of the PCP said the review already carried out by parliament was “insufficient.”
“Santa Casa cannot live in such uncertainty, with its reputation in doubt. We will be here to carry out this review,” said parliamentary leader Livre.
The PAN’s sole deputy noted that she would also be monitoring the investigation and said there were “serious issues at stake that need to be dealt with transparently.”
