Sarmento’s surplus is just 0.2 percent.

Fernando Medina predicted a surplus of 0.7% of gross domestic product (GDP) for 2024. Brussels pointed to 0.4%, the Stability Program implemented by the AD government has already determined a surplus of 0.3%, and this Thursday on Friday the Minister of Finance Miranda Sarmento already admitted that the public account surplus will not exceed 0.2%.

According to the newspaper Negócios, which quotes Joaquim Miranda Sarmento’s interview with the North American channel CNBC following the Eurogroup meeting held in Luxembourg, the Portuguese Finance Minister admitted that he ended the year with a “small surplus of between 0.2% and 0.3% of GDP” in government reports, but this does not call into question the country’s fiscal sustainability.

This Thursday, the PS considered that Portugal’s exit from the group of countries with macroeconomic imbalances meant that the European Commission had refused the government, demanding an “act of contrition” from the Minister of Finance.
