Commission of Inquiry begins discussion on Antonio Costa hearings, proposed by Chega

The mother of Portuguese-Brazilian twins being treated at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon is testifying this Friday to a parliamentary commission of inquiry.

The hearing into the case of children treated with the drug Zolgensma, which costs two million euros per person, began on Monday with testimony from former undersecretary of state for health Antonio Lacerda Sales.

The work of the commission will last until July 26, will be suspended in August and will resume on September 10.

The twins’ mother is asking that the video Ventura submitted showing the children’s faces not be shown on CPI.

Chega asked for evidence to be provided to the investigative commission (the video was originally published by CNN Portugal when the case became public).

Due to the fact that the girls’ faces are visible, the mother asks that the video not be shown. “This video has already been watched and it shows nothing,” says Daniela Martins.

The mother’s discomfort with showing her children’s faces sparked a debate in the committee, with most parties in favor of the video not being broadcast.

“The country is debating whether there was a gap in access to healthcare. It’s not a matter of privacy, it’s a matter of whether there was a breakup or not. There’s no need for that,” Ventura countered.

Andre Ventura shows the mother of twins an email intended for the former health minister.

Andre Ventura takes the floor and shows Daniela Martins an email that was sent from the girls’ mother’s account through Juliana Drumond, Marcelo’s daughter-in-law, and addressed to the former Minister of Health.

“Tell me: is this your letter? “Did you send him?” asked the Chegi leader.

The girls’ mother replies that it’s actually her email, but she doesn’t know about that particular message. “I will check the withdrawal from my personal account, but this is my correct email address. But I can’t guarantee that it was me who wrote it. Several people had access to my mailbox,” he replied.

Ventura asked the twins’ mother if any request had been made to a political leader to facilitate the citizenship process. Daniela assured me that this was not the case.

“Are you telling me that all the Portuguese authorities helped you, but you never asked anyone for help?” asks Ventura.

“I should have been ‘transferred’ from the private system to the public system”: Mother of twins on the cancellation of the meeting in Luciadas

The mother of the Portuguese-Brazilian girls assured that she did not know why the appointment at Luciadas Hospital was cancelled. “I don’t know who canceled the meeting in Luciadas and who scheduled it in Santa Maria. They had to transfer me from the private system to the public system,” he said.

The twins’ mother says she was “sending out” emails asking for help and that son Marcelo saw it.

Daniela says she “sent” several standard emails about the girls’ situation so they could get treatment. Unable to explain why Nuno Rebelo de Souza decided to make an appointment, he says the severity of his daughters’ illness might have piqued anyone’s interest.

“He [Nuno Rebelo de Sousa] I must have had access to my email by default. I made a distress signal. It doesn’t surprise me that someone who knew about the girls’ situation passed on this message,” he said.

When asked by PS if she had mutual friends with Nuno Rebelo de Souza, Daniela replied that she could not remember. “I don’t remember,” he said.

“My requests for help were publicABOUTWith and targeted different people, I have no way of knowing who it reached.”

The twins’ mother insists that she has never approached the government with any request.

Daniela Martins guaranteed that she never applied to “any government agency for medication” for her daughters. The Portuguese-Brazilian girls’ mother said she didn’t even know Marcelo’s son Rebelo de Souza when the children started Z treatment.olgensma.

“I met his wife in 2022 at a Christmas event. I would like to understand why they used my story to try to convey it to other people,” he commented.

Mother of twins slams ‘wave of hatred against family’

The mother of twins has criticized the “wave of hatred against the family” in recent months. “My data was not saved even in the Santa Maria hospital,” said Daniela Martins.

The mother of twins said she was “immensely grateful to SNS and the Portuguese government” for the treatment of the Portuguese-Brazilian children.

“Contrary to what people say, I am not a privileged person,” he said.

Mother of twins excited: ‘My daughters are Portuguese citizens’

The twins’ mother was emotional during her first intervention with the inquiry committee.

“I am the granddaughter of four Portuguese grandparents and a partner in the company in Portugal from 2016 to 2022. I’m not an ordinary tourist. My daughters are Portuguese citizens. (…) I did what any mother would do,” said Daniela Martins.

The Commission of Inquiry summons Nuno Rebelo de Souza for a hearing on July 3 or 12.

The parliamentary commission of inquiry into the case of twins treated at the Santa Maria Hospital has once again demanded the presence of the son of the President of the Republic, saying that his refusal to appear “constitutes a crime of insubordination.”

The commission unanimously approved the summons of Nuno Rebelo de Souza, which is to be heard on July 3 or 12 in person or via videoconference, before hearing the mother of the Portuguese-Brazilian children.

“According to Article 19 of the Regulations on Parliamentary Inquiries, refusal to appear to give evidence before this commission of inquiry, except in cases provided for in Article 17, constitutes a crime of qualified disobedience,” the commission said.

Parliamentary hearings on António Costa approved

The PSD, IL and CDS-PP approved Cega’s request to have former Prime Minister Antonio Costa heard by a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the case of twins treated with the drug Zolgensma.

The request to hear the former head of government was approved with votes in favor of representatives of Chegi, SDP, IL and CDS-PP, abstentions from BE and PCP and votes against PS, Livre and PAN.

Under the legal regime for parliamentary inquiries, former prime ministers can “give evidence in writing if they wish.”
