Portuguese pilot project The four-day week, which involved 41 companies and 332 workers, was classified as financially neutral by 80% of administrators.
The project was developed in 2023 by the Ministry of Social Security in collaboration with Professors Pedro Gomez (University of London) and Rita Fontinha (University of Reading), which assessed the impact of this type of working time, in companies, workers over a period of six months, together with private sector companies and their families.
They worked 41.6 hours before the pilot, and 36.5 hours during the pilot.
The project’s final report, published this Monday by the Institute for Employment and Training (IEFP), states that only one organization had to hire more workers.
Workers report improved mental and physical health, work-family-life balance, and increased satisfaction with work and life in general. In the end, 93% of workers said they wanted to continue.
