On Monday, the Foreign Secretary noted that the decision to select António Costa to the European Council was still under review, but warned that work must continue ahead of this week’s meeting.
“Eight days ago today the Council [Europeu] informally, and at this informal council in the evening the Prime Minister made a statement. This statement remains valid,” Paulo Rangel told reporters at a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg.
The Foreign Minister added that the candidacy of former Prime Minister António Costa for the presidency of the European Council was still in the process: “This is our perception for now,” he said.
“As you know, I always maintain that the decision belongs to the Council. [Europeu]. Until then, we will all have to work,” he added, referring to a summit on Thursday and Friday at which decisions are expected to be made on the selection of the main positions of European institutions, known in Brussels jargon as the “top vacancies”.
