João Cotrim Figueiredo (of the Liberal Initiative) withdrew his candidacy for the presidency of Renovar a Europa, the liberal group in the European Parliament, “following the last-minute withdrawal of several delegations.”
“After several delegations withdrew their support at the last minute, I have decided not to advance my candidacy for the presidency of Renovar a Europa,” João Cotrim de Figueiredo said in a statement.
The former Liberal Initiative president added that he had “frank and fruitful discussions” with the political group’s current president, French MEP Valérie Hayer, during his nomination and withdrawal.
“We conclude that we share a common concern about the need to develop a ‘Renewing Europe’ in response to the guidance given to us by the latest election results,” he added.
The former president of IL has nominated himself to become one of the group’s vice presidents.
