This is not the billion that Finance Minister Miranda Sarmento accused the socialist government of leaving unpaid, but the truth is that the deficit has returned to public accounts. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in the first three months of the year, while still under the responsibility of the António Costa government (Montenegro only took office on April 2), the general government accounts recorded a deficit of 118.9 million euros, which corresponds to 0.2% of gross domestic product (GDP).
If we compare with the first quarter of 2023, when a surplus of 691.9 million euros was recorded, we see a deterioration in the state of the state’s accounts.
The first quarter of each year is always atypical because revenue collected in 2024 is still accounted for in the previous year’s budget. Miranda Sarmento has already guaranteed that he can finish the year with a small surplus of between 0.2% and 0.3% of GDP.
