The president of the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), Luis Gus Pinheiro, heard parliament on Tuesday about the functioning of the body that is trying to resolve the 400,000 pending immigrant cases in the country.
Established in October 2023, AIMA is responsible for completing the regularization process for new immigrants, a controversial situation as there are thousands of unresolved issues and the threat of almost a quarter of the organization’s staff leaving as part of the organization’s mobility. social function.
On 29 October, AIMA took over the functions of the former Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) and the High Commission for Migration (ACM). This merger was contested by the then opposition (the PS ruled with an absolute majority at the time), which led to criticism. which has increased in recent months due to the organization’s inability to recover the number of unresolved issues.
The Migration Action Plan, now announced by the PSD/CDS government, kept the institute open, stripped it of its powers to order the return of immigrants and gave it new powers to renew documents.
The current government has also decided to retain Luis Gus Pinheiro as AIMA President, who previously served as Undersecretary of State for Administrative Modernization of the PS.
In an interview with Lusa, Goes Pinheiro insisted that only upgrading the computer system and updating the planning model will facilitate procedures and make up for the time lost in solving unresolved problems.
The hearings, which will be held in the Committee on Constitutional Issues, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, are being held at the request of B.E. and Livra.
